The pre-Kinder blog

Tomorrow my husband, son and I will be driving up to the Peak District for our two night adventure which will include doing Kinder.

The route we will be taking is below:

Originally I wanted to start in Edale and follow the Pennine Way to Kinder Downfall and then head towards Crowden and descend Grinds Brook Clough back to Edale. However, having spoken to a couple of people who know Grinds Brook (I haven't done it before) and bearing in mind we'll be with my son, who is 11, we've decided to do it the other way round. So we'll be heading up Grinds Brook and then following the Pennine Way back to Edale, meaning we'll go down Jacob's Ladder, rather than up.

I had a number of reasons why I wanted to go "clockwise":
1. I wanted to say I'd at least done the first 5 miles of the Pennine Way!!
2. I've gone down Jacob's Ladder before but never up.
3. I think going outbound on the more well-trodden path of the Pennine Way may be easier from a navigation point of view. I don't know how good a path it is from Kinder Downfall to just north of Crowden Tower and then east to Grinds Brook. I would be more confident taking a bearing from Kinder Downfall having reached it via the Pennine Way than getting to the top of Grinds Brook Clough and then trying to navigate to Kinder Downfall.

But safety first and all that so we're going to go "anti-clockwise" because going down Grinds Brook Clough looks a lot harder than going up.

So, fingers crossed it all goes well and the weather is good (but not too hot) and I'll report on the trip when we get back.
